CANADA ONTARIO JOB GRANT – COJG

Canada-Ontario Job Grant (COJG) provides opportunities for employers, individually or in groups, to invest in their workforce, with help from the government. The Grant provides direct financial support to individual employers who wish to purchase training for their workforce. The employer chooses the individuals they would like to have trained and the type of training that meets with their workforce development needs, and if eligible, may qualify to pay only 1/6 of the training cost; 100% cost covered if the employee is a new hire. However, Grant is a cost-sharing agreement between individual employers and the government. No cost must ever be assigned to the employee.

Benefits of the Grant

Large business employers pay 1/2 of the training cost, (100 or more employees) and gain approximately $10,000 in training cost per employee.
Small business employers contribute 1/6 of the eligible training costs, (less than 100 employees) and gain up to $15,000 in training cost per employee.
“New Hire” employees are assessed at 100% training cost covered.
$500 allowance for program/course materials + $500 in travel expenses in the event that the individual travels 24K or more to and from training.

Eligibility: Employee

If you reside in Ontario and either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or a protected person and meet all the eligibility requirements. You must be selected for training by an employer who begins the process.
If unemployed, you must be sponsored by an employer through a permanent or conditional offer of employment.
Is not participating in full-time training or education or any other government training intervention that offers funding support for the same training, tuition, books or other training-related costs.
Cannot be a majority shareholder with the company.

Eligibility: Employer

Employers must contribute a minimum of half (1/2) of training costs; except in the case of small employers (less than 100 employees) who will contribute 1/6 of the training costs.
The individual selected for training must be employed by the company.
Must be licensed to operate in Ontario.
Be applying for training that is delivered in Ontario and is related to a job located in Ontario.
Comply with the occupational Health and Safety Act and the Employment Standards Act.
Maintain appropriate workplace safety and Insurance Board or Private Workplace Safety Insurance Coverage.
Have adequate Third Party General Liability Insurance as advised by its insurance broker.
Comply with all applicable federal and provincial human rights legislation, regulations, and any other relevant standards.

Note

For employer groups who want to apply for training supports the government offers a COJG Consortium Stream.
The Consortium Stream allows a group of employers (two or more employers) to pool their resources to support common training objectives and goals.
To apply as a consortium, the intermediary organization needs to ensure all the participating employers and trainees meet COJG requirements and are able to make their required contribution towards the training cost.
Most organizations acting as an intermediary are eligible for administrative funding equal to 15% of the government contribution.
